The rivers around the Manawatu come within the Wellington Fish & Game region. They are  mainly freestone, and usually run from the Ruahine Ranges in the North or from the Tararua Ranges in the South. With such a large catchment area the fly fishing options are vast.  Most of the rivers and streams in this region  hold a resident population of Brown Trout with a few rivers holding resident Rainbow Trout .
