Scenic Flyfishing In Remote Chile

Frequent flights from Santiago will bring you 1000 km to Puerto Montt where we will meet you.  After a 1-hour scenic drive along the south shore of Lago Llanquihue we will reach the lodge in its magnificent remote setting on the slopes of 6500' Calbuco Volcano.  The rest of the day can be spent relaxing, hiking on the property, or on a short fishing excursion, depending on the time of day.  Cocktails will be served on the terrace to the setting sun on Lake Llanquihue, Osorno Volcano 8700', Puntiagudo Volcano, and the Petrohue Valley.  A fabulous dinner with famous Chilean wine will be served each evening.

After breakfast we will be off to fish one of three possible day-long float trips on the Petrohue River.  Good fishermen can expect to hook/move 30-40 rainbow and brown trout, with an average size of about 16", usually with 1-4 browns in the 19"+ range.  Lunch will be enjoyed riverside.  Typically we will see few other anglers, if any.  Back at the lodge we will enjoy pisco sours or other cocktails, and appetizers, followed by outstanding creations by Teresa, accompanied with fine Chilean wine.

Each morning we will depart for a day-long float trip on one of the area's excellent rivers.  There are 3 floats on the Petrohue River, 3 floats on the Maullin River, and 1 float on the Puelo River.  Your host and guide will discuss the options with you and decide where to go for top hooking each day, given the existing climatic, and other, conditions.

There are many fishing options in the area besides rivers, including smaller streams, and scenic lakes.  Your preferences will determine the fishing program that will be designed for you.

Scenic Flyfishing In Remote Chile - The most scenic part of Chile is also reknown for its excellent fisheries.  Our lodge, near Ensenada in the Andean foothills at the east end of Lago Llanquihue has an eagle's view of the surrounding great lakes and volcanos.  We are centrally situated only minutes from world-class waters.  Our specialty is fly fishing in for strong, wild fish, away from everyone else, in settings of natural splendor, with a real chance for trophy trout. We are located in an area of great diversity in fisheries and landscapes. Choose your favorite types of water among large and small rivers and streams, large and small lakes, lagoons, and salt water estuaries. There is the possibility to play browns, rainbows, sea-run browns and salmon all in the same day! Our home water runs from the Andean peaks on the border with Argentina down to the foothills punctuated with live volcanoes, on to the fjords, and across the forested rolling lowlands to the Pacific Ocean. Weather conditions are generally favorable, and lacking that famous wind of Argentina. We always have clear-stream options. Our guides are professional and personable, fly fishermen from childhood, eager to share their expertise and put you onto fish. The comfort and hospitality at the lodge is more than you’d ask for. To be utterly dependable we use only top-of-the-line gear, boats, and vehicles.

Non-angling companions will have plenty of alternative activities to choose from in the immediate area e.g. rafting, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, summit ascents, excursions, windsurfing, touring, and more. We can easily arrange any of these adventure activities for you.

Area fisheries are famous for large, wild, hard-fighting browns.  These trout feed primarily on pancora crayfish, freshwater prawns, and minnows.  Given that diet, the most effect fishing method employs big streamers and sinking tip lines.  However, the techniques that we use are not chuck, duck and luck, or dredging, but rather an exciting interactive target shooting on the float that is exhilarating.  Anglers will witness the entire drama as aggressive trout are provoked from the depths to attack a visible fly just below the surface.  Everyone remarks on the strength of these fish that go ballistic when hooked, probably for the first time ever!

The combination of the beautiful transparent jade waters flowing in rapids through a rain forest jungle of lush, exotic-flowered vegetation, with an immediate backdrop of snowcapped volcanoes and Andean peaks, exciting fishing with a skilled and amiable guide, is a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

In the lakes trout are fond of dragonflies and damselflies, and will take adults as well as nymphs.  Dries fished around the reed beds are eagerly devoured, as are nymph patterns fished under the surface.

The lodge commands a spectacular view from the lower slopes of Volcán Calbuco, the snowy volcano in the back yard.  The one in front is Volcán Osorno.  You’ll be 7 minutes from casting in Rio Tepu, 15 minutes from the Rio Petrohué, and 20 minutes from Lago Todos Los Santos.  There are over a dozen select day-long angling options within an hour's drive of the lodge.  

There are 3 spacious guest bedrooms with private bathrooms at the lodge, 2 in the main house plus a wonderful "honeymoon" cabin that could actually hold an entire family.  Due to the high level of personal attention that we like to give each guest, we prefer to have only up to 6 anglers at a time.  

Season is from 2nd Friday of November to 1st Sunday in May.
