When not fishing you may wish to take advantage of some of the excellent hunting in the area with Trophy Red Stags, Chamois, Tahr, Wild Boar and abundant small game all found close to the Lodge.

A Stunning Deluxe Riverside Retreat - Many of our rivers are easily accessible by 4WD vehicle (as provided by our guides) and those inaccessible parts of the Maruia and other exceptional rivers in the area can be accessed quickly by our helicopter fly-out service. The Lodge itself is right on the banks of one of the most famous Brown Trout Rivers in the world - the Maruia River has 186 brown trout per kilometre or 296 per mile (as surveyed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries). It is a great river for both the novice and the intrepid angler - a tributary of the Buller River System ensures a variety of good trout fishing on your doorstep. The Lodge has approximately 2km of river frontage on the Maruia River.

Many of our Guests have caught their Trophy Brown Trout whilst staying with us - we love to see those 'beaming' faces at the end of such a day!

Professional guides with 4WD vehicles are available for those wishing to explore some of the many varied and challenging streams and rivers in the district. Guides are all expert local guides and are very willing to share their knowledge with both novice and advanced anglers and are fully equipped to make your day a memorable angling experience.

The helicopter fly-out service from the Lodge can take you over the hills to beautiful remote valleys - an exhilarating experience in search of that Trophy Brown!

For Anglers who do not know the region, we would always recommend hiring a professional guide.

Fishing is available for all levels of fitness. Let us know your level of fitness when making a reservation and we will ensure your Guide plans the perfect fishing vacation for you.

High season (mid summer) is January, February. Bookings (both reservations and guides) need to be made as early as possible for this busy period.

The bag limit is three fish per person per day, however many anglers and guides do suggest a catch and release policy - this helps preserve our fisheries. Fishing licenses (issued by New Zealand Fish & Game) are available for purchase from the Lodge.

The sitting room and bar provide a wonderfully stylish atmosphere to relax in, whether to reflect quietly on your day's activities, share your travelling tales with fellow guests, or to savour your aperitif whilst deciding on which mouth-watering dish you will choose for dinner.

The Lodge is celebrated for its outstanding food and wine selection. Ruth, our chef, selects the finest fresh local produce to create mouth-watering dishes for our changing daily menu. Our proximity to Nelson provides us with fantastic fresh deep sea fish and Nelson scallops and our local butcher provides us with the finest organic meat.

We run our dining room along 'restaurant' lines with individual tables - so it's your choice at what time you dine and who you dine with. Before this sumptuous five course dinner with choice of main course, Guests meet in the bar for pre dinner cocktails with hosts.

Privacy is guaranteed when you stay in one of the seven luxurious detached cottages each with their own private facilities and covered balcony that overlook the banks of the Maruia River. Choose from two styles of cottage suite - the Deluxe or the Grand Deluxe

Our cottage suites have everything you need to enjoy your stay including; the quietest air conditioning to keep you cool on those hot summer nights, mini-bar, fresh fruit, tea and coffee-making facilities, bath robes, hairdryers, CD player and direct-dial telephone.

Every last detail has been considered, right down to sourcing the most comfortable of beds (Super-king size Sealy Posturepeadic). The bathrooms can only be described as sheer luxury being marble clad with under-floor heating. And of course, each cottage has a stunning view of the river.

The Deluxe cottage is a spacious junior suite with en-suite marble bathroom which has a double vanity and shower. Our Guests describe them as, a cosy home away from home with beautiful soft greens and golds that compliment the river and native plants we see from our balcony. The large desk is ideal for writing letters, sorting your travel plans or laying out all those fishing flies and paraphernalia!

Five of our cottages are Deluxe cottages.

The Grand Deluxe cottage suite is a large suite with a separate sitting room, separate bedroom and a large walk-in luggage/dressing room. Similar in design to the Deluxe cottage the colour scheme is sympathetic to our beautiful wilderness environment.

The Grand Deluxe bathroom has a wonderful double hydro-therapy spa bath to relax in, separate shower, double vanity and separate w.c.

The season is from 1 October to 30 April and good catches are to be had throughout the season. There is no particular wet or dry season in the mountains; however summers are usually warm with temperatures up to the 30s C or 80s F, and mid seasons in the low 20s C or high 60s F. Due to our maritime climate, New Zealand weather can change very quickly from being very hot to cold, wet and windy - we suggest all visitors come prepared!
