The Six-Day "River Ganges Mahseer Experience"

The Ganges River has provided tantalizing sport, which over the years, has been relished by sport fishermen from all over the world. Mentions of this river could be found in most accounts available on the mighty Mahseer - its significance, from the Mahseer fishing point of view, elevates it amongst the top rivers for the Mahseer of India, with excellent fishing potential.

This fishing trip on the Ganges is perfect for the travel angler who wishes to get the most of the Mahseer fishing along with a bit of culture and wildlife in a short period of time. The trip is undertaken deep in the foothills of the Himalayas on a river which provides the ideal habitat for the Mahseer. The stretches of the Ganges, where these trips are operated in, are very quiet and most lucrative. It truly is a great wilderness fishing experience without compromising on the accessibility factor. The largest Mahseer caught on the Ganges on spinning by us was in 2003, which weighed 55lbs. In 2004, that figure was reached again by another angler on the same river. And while you experience this wilderness fishing adventure you will not have to rough it out as the camp staff will be at work while you fish and relax!

The point where the rivulet, Nayar, meets the Ganges is one of the ideal fishing beats of the river. This place is called Byas Ghat, and is a great attraction for anglers who want to take on the Mahseer of the Ganges. In 1989, international angling figures John Bailey and Paul Boot shot the hour-long documentary called "Casting for Gold" at Byas Ghat. A number of huge Mahseer have been taken from this beat in the years gone by.

In the past, the Ganges and its tributaries have been the ground for field research, by various ichthyologists too.

Suggested Program:

Day 01: Fly in to New Delhi International Airport where you will be met and escorted to the Hotel. Transfer latter in the evening to the Delhi Railway station where you will board the overnight train to Haridwar.

Day 02: Arrive at Haridwar at 0600 hrs with your escort, here you will be met by our transport and begin a 30-minute drive to Rishikesh, which is 25 kilometers from Haridwar. Reach hotel in Rishikesh, freshen up, have breakfast and continue the drive to Devprayag - the confluence of the two rivers, the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi, which at his point forms the holy Ganges. This drive is about 60 kilometers - which takes roughly 3 hours.

Devprayag is where the River Ganges begins and is also where we start our expedition. Our team will meet the guests on the banks of the river, where the expedition begins. Each member of the expedition will be provided with gear that will be required for the trip. After a short briefing from your river guide we will begin the expedition down the river in 16' rafts to access the most lucrative beats on the river. Packed lunches will be provided as we take a break on one of the pristine sand beaches along the way. We will be rafting down stream to the famous Byas Ghat beat where John Bailey and Paul Boot shot the famous "Casting for Gold" documentary back in 1989 .

We will reach the beat at about 1500 hrs. After everybody settles into his or her tents we will start fishing at Byas Ghat.

Day 03: Spend the day fishing at Byas Ghat. This is the confluence of the Nayar with the Ganges. The Nayar is a crystal clear rivulet, which runs into the mighty Ganges - it is at this point where some of the larger Mahseer have been caught.

Spinning is the most common method used here, where you could catch fish up to 60lbs. There's good fly fishing in the Nayar and along the beat where one could catch up to 10 lbs fish on the fly. We will spend the whole day exploring this beat.

Day 04: Depending on the fishing conditions, we have the option of drifting downstream or continuing to fish at Byas Ghat.
Further down there's yet another interesting beat to be fished. So depending on the results at Byas Ghat that decision is made.

Day 05: We will drift down river to some interesting section for fishing and try our hand at some of the spots as we drift down. Set up camp on one of the spotless beaches along the way, where we decide to fish this evening and the following morning.

Day 06: After the morning's fishing session, the expedition will float down to Kaudyala. We will reach the hotel in the afternoon (after a picnic lunch on the banks of the river). After a couple of hours of rest at the hotel we will drive to the Chilla National Park (some 22 kilometers from the hotel) - for a wild life excursion / there is also an option of visiting the Arti (evening prayer ceremony) which is conducted on the banks of the holy Ganges every evening. We will return to the Hotel in time for dinner after which you will be driven back to Haridwar train station, to catch the over night train to Delhi which departs at appox. 2230hrs.

Day 07: Arrive in Delhi railway station with your escort, in the early hours of the morning and get transferred to the Hotel. Transfer back to the airport as per your flight schedule.

If you'd like his program to be extended, it can be done, as we could incorporate another day or two into this program.
