WHERE TO FISH IN ITALY

The Venetian region is probably one of the best regions in Italy for flyfishing.
The Piave river plays an important role for fishing marble trout and hybrid. In some pools there are nice grayling too.

In Belluno, there is the possibility to catch with a dry fly trouts above 16 inches, and with a little luck and skill, even some in the 20 " range are not impossible. In Cortina d'Ampezzo the Boite river contains a good number of brown trout.

Stillwater flyfishing is done in the Spring and Summer on pristine and very scenic alpine lakes.
The nearby region Alto Adige has a lot of good waters too!

WHERE TO FISH IN AUSTRIA & SLOVENIA

Near Cortina (35km) there are nice austrian rivers as the Kleine Drau or Villgratenbach. In the first you can find many trouts and some graylings. The second one is a fast water stretch in a wonderful mountain valley.

If you would like to fish in the most beautiful rivers of Europe, from Sappada they are reachable in about two hours driving: Unec, Soca, Sava an Radovna are spectacular rivers, almost worldfamous. Even Idrjica river is a top river wich needs 25 minutes more driving.

Unec river is my favorite, maybe the only one which has remained inalterated after all this years. Here the hatches are extraordinary and offer you an excellent grayling fishing! Big browns are there too, and really wild! Idrjica in the upper part offers browns, marbled, rainbows trouts and graylings. Hatches are there good. Radovna river is small but probably the beautifullest creek I've ever fished. Brook trouts are here common. Fishes aren't here too big because of the water temperature which is extreemly cold. Sava river is one of my favorite waters, a real beauty, and I won't forget Soca, the blue-white jewel known to be the most beuatiful river in Europe!

Fishing in Soca is difficult because of the clear water and the spooky fish. Unfortunally the number of fishes during these last years has decreased. Then there is the problem of the rafting tourists too, but as I once said: "If you have never fished Soca river, you have missed a part of flyfishing!" If you really like trophy fishes, the tropphy part of Krka river is what you need. Most of the times this fishes (rainbows) have been stocked. Lepena river is a tributary of Soca, small but beautiful in which marble trouts are not too rare!

Location and Fishing Information

Fishing 3 Countries! Italy, Austria & Slovenia - Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of the most famous mountain turistic location in the world. For flyfishing too, Cortina gives you a lot of alternatives.
In fact Cortina d'Ampezzo is surrounded by all kind of different waters: Veneto is nowdays the best region for flyfishing in Italy, but Trentino Alto Adige is very good too and it's only 20km from Cortina. Then threre are the austrian waters too, reachable with the car in less than 45 minutes.

Sappada, another beautiful turistic town, lies about 60km east from Cortina. This means just one important thing: the famous slovenian rivers like: Unec, Soca, Sava...etc., are reachable with two hours car driving!
Friuli region with it's beautiful rivers is very near too, and Austria with the valley of the Gail is reachable with aproximatly 90 minutes driving.
About Your Guide:

Flyfisher since 1986, I live and work in Cortina d'Ampezzo. My strong passion for fly fishing has given me a good experience the northern Venetian region, austrian and slovenian rivers.
I fish with dry fly, nymph and streamer, choosing the best technique for every different situation.

I love to tie my own flies (for seven years I've been fly tier instructor at the Fly Fisher Club of Milan) and recently I've become Certified Flycasting Instructor FFFE.
I'm certain that only practical fishing experience makes the difference. That's why, you can often find me fishing...

My holidays are fully dedicated to fly fishing. I love to make experience in other countries: Canada, Iceland, Alaska, Cape Cod (Mass), Montana, Cuba, Spain and Venezuela. From Cortina I often go fishing in the near Austria and Slovenia. Alto Adige too has great rivers and lakes.
I write for PIPAM the italian fly fishing web site since 1995 and for Sedge&Mayfly, the italian fly fishing magazine since 2000. I speak English and German.

Available Dates:

Fishing season starts in February. It is possible to fish for pikes, and with the second Sunday of the month graylings and trouts are ready to be fished in the Rienza river.

So if you want to combine skiing and flyfishing, in Cortina you can do it!

In Veneto the fishing season starts the first Sunday of March. In this period fishing is very good during the warmer hours of the day.

April is excellent for fly fishing and May is good too on the rivers not affected by runoff.

During May and June the slovenian rivers will offer us incredible hatches of insects: Unec, Idrjica and Sava will be at their top!

July and August are warm months and fly fishing in small mountain rivers with fast waters will be a pleausure. In Austria there are different good rivers for this period!

In Veneto the fishing season closes at the last Sunday of September, but there are lots of others rivers in Slovenia, Austria and Trentino Alto Adige, which consent us to have beautiful autumn fly fishing moments. Some rivers are fishable till end of November.

Flyfisher from other countries who want to fish in Italy need an italian fishing licence.

I can get one for them in one or two days.

The licence for foreigners will last three months and cost 35/45 Euro.
Fishing in Austria or Slovenia is easy: daily licences costs from 20Euro to 94Euro (Unec).
