The mighty River Lule has its source high up in the Swedish mountains, near the Norwegian border. At the end of its course, it empties into the Gulf of Bothnia at Luleå, about 440 km later. The fishing on the River Lule now enjoys a nationwide reputation. In 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2007 it produced the biggest rod-caught salmon in Sweden. The "hot" river areas, often only reachable by boat, become accessible in the winter when the ice is thick.

Interest in ice-fishing has increased in recent years, and on the River Lule too we have developed effective and fun techniques for catching salmon and trout with ice-jigs in the winter.

Fishing is available just outside Boden in northern Sweden, where we offer one of the best fishing waters in Sweden for ice-fishing for salmon and trout. Good-sized grayling can also be caught on an ice-jig.

Ice-fishing for salmon and trout is popular, fun and challenging. You have a good chance of combating salmon and trout on the River Lule.

We fish with Normark Red Pilker ice-fishing rod, ABU multiplier reel, Berkley line with a troll weighing between 4-13 grammes depending on how fast the current is. We drill a hole slanting downstream. Then we lower the bait, first 10-15 metres. Every fifth minute we let out a further 2-4 metres to fish a longer stretch.

One of the challenges is to find the fish. We drill our way forwards until we get the first bite. Then we know we have found the right area. We fish an area for 2-3 hours, then start the snowmobile and find a new fishing spot.
