New Zealand's Best Wild Trout Fishery

New Zealand, Rotorua — Package: 500146

Package Details and Information:

The following styles of fishing are for you to choose from. Tuition will be given throughout the days guiding or upon request.

Nymphing and Dry Fly on the Rivers
Picture some magnificent river surrounded by majestic scenery. Look for a likely spot, work out food source, depth and presentation. Cover every inch of water and watch as the trout takes your nymph with a strong hard pull to your fly line. Or see your trout as it rises slowly from the bottom to the surface to gently sip in your dry fly. You wait to the count of three and lift. Fish on! A truly amazing way to fish.

Fly-in for Remote River Fishing
The fishing in the remote National Parks is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The untouched mountainous scenery and the remote, isolated rivers in this wilderness catchment will stay with you for a very long time. These cunning wild trout are a terrific challenge as you test your wits and skills against them.

Evening Rise - the Dry Fly
There is excellent dry fly fishing on the rivers and often in the lakes. The evenings are a particularly good time to try for trophy fish. There is something quite special about this time of the evening, with the sun setting and the winds bedding down. A wonderful way to end your day.

Stillwater Nymphing
Stalking and catching a cruising trout is an amazing experience. It is a technique called still water nymphing. You target fish on their beats, present your fly with precision making sure you have chosen the correct imitation (obviously, I'll help with that). You wait for the flash of the large white mouth to open, then strike...fish on! This is my passion. It is wild trout fishing at its best.

Drift Fishing
This is done from a small dinghy on the lakes, targeting owns and rainbows. You cast in front of the boat. Sometimes you allow the line to extend with the wind, other times you will try your longest casts, depending on conditions. For retrieval, you use a pull/lift and hang technique, which is a classic English style and very successful in our waters.

Streamer Fishing
Is a great way to fish. Wade into the lake either during the day or evening using flies such as smelt or bully patterns (small fish), koura (crayfish) or dragonfly or damselfly nymphs. All of these are important food sources in our lakes. In the Summer months, this style of fishing can be very productive when the water flow of cold, oxygen-laden rivers and creeks attracts concentrations of trout and many of their food sources in from the relatively warm, oxygen-starved water of the main body of the lakes.

Evening Lake Fishing
The waters surrounding Rotorua produce some trophy trout in the winter months, mainly May – August. The majority are caught in the evening.

Available Dates:

The season opens on 1st October. Over the October - December period, nymphing is the most productive technique. However, with weather conditions permitting, anglers can expect dry fly during the warmer part of the day.

January to April is the heightened period for dry fly. During the winter months of May - August, there is exceptional fishing which is heightened as the main spawning run starts. It is the opportune time to target trophy rainbows and the occasional large own. For the hearty angler who can ave wintery conditions, there is a bonus of significant winter runs in the rivers.
"Pat is an outstanding fly fisherman and profuse fly-tier. His vast experience and enthusiasm knows no bounds and he has an amazing ability to communicate this expertise to his clients. Familiarity with each location leads to many a good days fishing."
Peter and Janet Holmes a’ Court
"Pat must be the world’s best fishing guide. He knows where the monsters lie and what flies they take. Although he is an international champion fly-fisherman his good manners and infinite patience in the face of my clumsy mistakes make him the truest gentleman of angling I have ever met. To stand with Pat and cast a fly across the mighty rush of a New Zealand river can only be described as fishing Nirvana."
Robin Jacoby
