Fly Fishing Lake Taupo — New Zealand, Turangi Package:500179
Dear Fellow Anglers
The name New Zealand raises the pulse of trout fishermen and women the world over, and wild rainbow and own trout have thrived better in the Lake Taupo system than anywhere else in this country. Many trophy trout over 10lbs are landed by our guests each year, with an overall average of over 4 lbs.
This season our guided anglers will fish over 30 rivers and streams and five lakes. Our expert guides provide a truly memorable trout fishing experience for both beginners and many of the world's most avid and discerning anglers. The knowledge and expertise of our guides is unequalled. We run our own rafts, four wheel drive vehicles and boats, and have some of the best back country nymph and dry fly fishing for sighted owns and rainbows to be found anywhere. Our helicopter access options offer truly remarkable fishing, but are by no means necessary.
I personally invite you to join the ranks of the many anglers who have enjoyed the trout fishing experience of a lifetime.
We believe guest use of guides is essential, regardless of the skill of the visiting angler. We strongly advise that guides are booked in advance.
For the dedicated fisherman or woman we offer opportunities to stalk and delicately present a dry fly to trophy owns and rainbows in high country streams during the summer months, upstream nymph fishing during the large rainbow spawning runs, or casting for feeding rainbows in shallow margins of Lake Taupo and other nearby lakes.
Wilderness helicopter and raft fishing into remote high country streams provide the chance to fish for the trophy trout of a lifetime.
We welcome the opportunity to introduce newcomers to trout fishing. Our Guides teach eager learners the fine art of fly fishing from the beginning. We provide the enjoyment of a day's trolling on Lake Taupo in comfortable surveyed boats. No experience necessary.

Location and Fishing Information
Fly Fishing Lake Taupo -
Our expert team of guides has provided guests at the Lodge with their Fishing Experience of a Lifetime for the last 20 years! A special thanks to all of them.
It is without doubt the angling skill, knowledge and experience of our excellent guides that maximizes the potential of this extensive fishery.
Through the experience of our guiding teams, special access to many rivers that run through private land has been acquired. Every year our guides get out and explore more 'waters' for our clients to enjoy. This area truly is a vast fishery that can provide the trout fishing experience of a lifetime year round to the beginner and expert alike
In an average season 50,000-plus adult rainbow and own trout migrate up the Tongariro River alone. The Lake Taupo fishery is the only area in New Zealand that remains open to fly fisherman all year. The lower sections of the tributary rivers and streams provide access to Taupo's large run of wild winter steelhead. With five of these tributaries within a twenty minute drive of Tongariro Lodge you can understand what a great winter fishing destination it is.
Lake Taupo is one of the most productive trout fisheries in the world. From May-October is the prime time to target the large adult rainbows averaging 4 - 8 lbs running up Lake Taupo's tributaries to spawn. The days are crisp and temperatures average 55 F, and it is often possible to fish wearing light winter clothing only in mid winter.
For those anglers in the know, the spring and early summer period, October through to Christmas has always been a premium time to enjoy the very best trout fishing New Zealand has to offer at the Lodge. The rainbows and owns tend to feed more aggressively and be less spooky early season. It is quite a sight to watch a feeding trout move 10 feet to engulf your fly! The longest day in New Zealand is in December so by November the days are long and the sun is higher, making spotting and stalking conditions ideal. With a lot of rivers running through high valleys, sun on the water is an important element. The waters are less busy and more opportunities exist at this time of year. Nymph fishing is often used but there can also be excellent dry fly fishing with good mayfly hatches along with own and green beetle by mid November.
