I am happy to recommend Steve. He is a first class guide and has the uncanny ability to see into the water even when the sun isn't shining! He has put me on to more fish than I care to remember and his advice has helped me catch more than I could have hoped. The fish are famously large and the hunting is exciting and Steve is the most pleasant of companions. (I'm going to embarrass him by copying him on this e-mail).
The policy is catch and release by the way.
I have not fished for salmon with Steve; I am convinced that the trout is the more attractive quarry. Steve also guides salmon fishermen and can be relied on to find them if they are there.
You'll enjoy the Rakaia river and the beauty of the countryside through which it flows and the mountains from which it springs. It is one of the finest examples of a braided river and you'll know what that means when you see it. Ever seen a river the turquoise colour of a Caribbean bay?
Pam and Roger Callaghan, who run Tyrone farm, are a marvelous pair of Kiwis whose friendliness and hospitality beat anything you'll find in the hotels. The deer farm is just outside Methven with no light pollution at night. Take the trouble to borrow Roger's ancient binoculars and take a look at the Southern Cross one night.

Location and Fishing Information
Fly Fishing Canterbury South Island - Base: Methven
Region; Canterbury,
South Island,
New Zealand
Methven is the base for my fishing guide operation. Methven is in the Canterbury region, located 1 hour's drive west of Christchurch International Airport, just off the scenic inland highway to the southern destinations.
The region has a rich agricultural heritage and provides visitors a number of activities including excellent Golf courses, Jet boating, Walks, Garden visits, Hot air ballooning, White water rafting, Skiing, Mountain biking, Hunting and Horse riding. Other attraction nearby include Christchurch, Akaroa, Arthur's Pass and Mt Cook.
My main area of operation extends from in and around this central base, north to include the Waimakariri River catchments, the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers and south to include the Mt Cook area.
Generally the fly fishing style is the classical South Island style of clear water sight fishing, where most trout are first sighted, then stalked, before being tempted with a dry fly or nymph. This is both an exciting and rewarding fishing style and suits parties of 1 or 2 persons per fishing guide.
There are many locations within range of a day trip from Methven and you can expect to encounter a good number of trout each day, how many you will catch will depend upon your skill!
My guide service includes the use of a jet boat and 4x4, so I can take you into some fairly remote and scenic fly fishing locations that you may otherwise not find. These places are up in the Canterbury high country and are where the better trout fishing is to be found.
I cater for all levels of ability and will help you as much as possible with techniques and local fishing styles. So don’t worry if you consider yourself a novice. You can still enjoy a positive and learning fishing experience.
