Location and Fishing Information
Fly Fishing San Juan River New Mexico - Guide services available on the San Juan River, Animas River , Turkey Creek, 4 Mile Creek, Piedra Creek, Wolf Creek, Rio Blanco and the East and West forks of the upper San Juan River.
We will now be offering full and half day guided fly and spin fishing trips on Navajo Lake for smallmouth, pike and carp. We are the only lodge in the area with a full time guide that is also a licensed US Coast Guard Captain!
The San Juan River Quality Waters located below Navajo Dam, are considered to be among the top three world-class streams in the West. The constant year round temperature (40 degrees) of the river has created a four season fishery unequalled in the U.S., producing fantastic fly fishing for trophy rainbow trout averaging 17 inches and two to four pounds. Rainbows over 20 inches are frequently caught on both nymphs & dry flies!
The river offers outstanding dry fly and nymph fishing. It is an excellent fishery for both beginning and advanced flyfishers. Fed by a constant stream of insects, a trout on the San Juan can grow 15 inches in a year. Often you can stand in one spot and see anywhere from 50 to 100 trout all around you in the clear waters. This is truly an amazing river; one that will keep you coming back time after time.
Near the dam, Midges are the main source of food for the trout, with some Mayflys present. As we move downstream and the water begins to warm Mayflys increase dramatically and Caddis begin to appear in large numbers. Mayfly hatches in the Winter are awesome, crowds are small, and the trout are hungry and feisty.
Downstream from the Quality Waters we have access to the private waters by use of drift boat, providing the opportunity to catch both large Rainbows and Brown trout on 8.5 or 13.5 miles of private water. Here trout to 25 inches are often caught. We also guide on many rivers and small mountain creeks in the Pagosa Springs area or on the Animas river in Durango.
