Location and Fishing Information
Wilderness Alaska Saltwater/freshwater Fishing - Ketchikan, Alaska is located on Revilla Island in the Southern Panhandle of Alaska, 234 miles south of Juneau. KTN is 680 miles, only 90 minutes North of Seattle by air by Alaska Airlines, which happens to be the only commercial passenger carrier to fly into the Salmon Capital of The World! Ketchikan is the First City of Alaska, 22 miles west of Misty Fiords National Monument & Wilderness Area, 50 miles to the border of British Columbia and 90 miles from Prince Rupert, BC. The only way to access the city of Ketchikan is to fly Alaska Airlines, private jet or small plane, by the Alaska State Ferry System, or by private or chartered vessels. Some have even come by kayak......
Ketchikan's relative isolation makes it a great destination for those seeking a slower paced and uncrowded venue of exploration. Although the cruise ship tourism industry brings almost a million adventure seekers and shoppers to Ketchikan and beyond during the summer, there are many opportunities to get off the beaten track and avoid the downtown frenzy of tourists! Number one of course is a private group charter with us is the only way to explore untouched wilderness environments and to experience unspoiled fishing grounds all to yourself.
Also known as the Inside Passage, Southeast Alaska is very different in many ways. The climate is unique in that it's a Temperate Rainforest, a rainforest that endures a change of seasons. The area recieves over 120 inches of rain a year that promotes lush, green forests, thousands of freshwater creeks, streams, and rivers that wind their way to the bays, fiords, canals and then to the ocean. Summer temps are a mild and comfortable 55-65 degrees during the day and hardly dipping below 50 degrees at night. During the Spring & Fall the rain is plentiful and temps can make 50-60 during the day and nights are a refreshing 40-45 degrees.
The protected waterways of Southeast Alaska are a myriad of islands, reefs, channels, bays that offers excellent opportunities for cruising and fishing in comfort and safety in any weather conditions. During storms when uncomfortable conditions exist, Captain Rob always finds a quiet and calm anchorage to safely continue the groups pursuits of adventure! Our primary area of exploration is inside the protected coastal waterways, and only in excellent weather and sea conditions do we venture to outside waters, and then, never more than 3 miles offshore...no need to go any further! The coastal areas AWAY FROM the jam packed fishing frenzy of Mountain Point and Clover Pass areas are some of the best fishing to be found anywhere on the planet! That's where we go.....anywhere and everywhere away from the crowds....and into fantastic fishing of all sizes and flavors!!!
Join the hundreds of satisfied clients & friends from all over the globe and explore Southeast Alaska, Prince of Wales Island, and Misty Fiords National Monument & Wilderness Area with CAC....the ultimate Alaska fishing cruise!
In many ways Alaska fishing is the best in the world The magnificent habitats, untouched wilderness ecosystems, and pristine oceans and coastlines, enable all fishery stocks to thrive in excellent numbers. A highly regulated fishery it’s managed by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game for sustainability. In addition to the world class wild stocks of salmon, hundreds of hatcheries throughout the State provide millions of salmon fry, fingerlings and smolts to rivers, lakes, and ocean bays. Tens of thousands do make it back years later and enhance the numbers to be sought after by commercial and sport fishermen. Intensive management and strict regulations in it’s various forms by ADF&G enables a prosperous and long term viability of our fantastic resource for all those in their piscatorial pursuits far into the future.
In Southeast Alaska a variety of species of fish are sought after and found, with as much variety in the techniques to catch them. Regardless of what you’ve heard about with the huge 300lb Halibut and giant 80lb King Salmon....and other monster fish stories, while many are true, they are few, and a small percentage of the overall experience of most fishermen fishing in Alaska. The best advice to give is to come up with expectations of having a great time with friends and family, fish as much or as little as you like, and catch a lot of dandy fish, pray for great weather and wildlife sightings, and hope your film turns out of all the big ones you catch
Here in the Ketchikan area, with Captain Rob you’ll learn to appreciate new techniques of locating, attracting, and catching all species of fish found in Southeast Alaska. Although we have the heavy gear for those particular areas and needs for stout gear, we generally introduce folks to our medium to light tackle rods n reels. With the lighter gear were able to work a variety tackle without the fatigue thereby reserving your strength for the enjoyment of fighting your big fish......rather than using all your energy for cranking up 2 lb weights from 400' deep Our style of fishing allows women and kids to join in the fun too without making it feel like too much work. Everyone loves the way WE do it For those who are accustomed to trolling and watching rods for a bite.....well, we do that too, but try not to spend a lot of time trolling if fishing is slow. When you experience the medium & light tackle jigging we encourage, you’ll understand why we’re different than all the others.....and you’ll be glad you took the time to learn OUR way of catching the big ones
We have FUN, and concentrate on a great time with a variety of areas to fish and activities to participate in. Indeed, we’ll catch a lot of fish.....no doubt about it Typically we reach many of the weekly bag limits (double the daily limit in possession), but bag limits “everyday” is something that’s unnecessary and unrealistic. Meat hunters determined to expect limits of 100+ lb Halibut and 50+ lb Salmon limits everyday.....Good Luck finding a guide that can follow through with that tall order That’s not our operation. Fishing with us, folks can expect to head home with about 40-50 pounds of filleted and packaged fish per person to enjoy for months to come. Halibut up to 200 lbs we’ve landed, but most are under 100 lbs with an average of 15-60 lbs. We netted and kept a 62 lb King Salmon a few years back, have landed a few in the 50 lb class, and more in the 40 lb range. Most Kings caught aboard the Saltery C are in the 20-40 lb pound class. Coho's early in the season run 8-12 lbs and then later in Sept the monsters arrive weighing in at 14-20 lbs! Chums (Keta) and Pink Salmon are also caught in large numbers, often limiting out with 50-60 fish days......just in salmon!

Accommodation:
You'll cruise in style and comfort aboard the Saltery "C," a 40' Bayliner Explorer Motoryacht designed for extended overnight fishing, cruising, and recreation. Over the several years of service, many additions and upgrades have been applied that have enhanced the overall experience for our guests. The latest upgrades occurred in Spring of 2004 with a 38" underhull extension that replaces the swimstep and has increased the vessels performance noticeably. A fiberglass top was also installed over the fishing cockpit, to keep folks dry and out of the elements, a real advantage in this rainforest environment.
Below decks a new 6.5 kw generator was installed in the Spring of 2003, and the repowering of the main engines back in 1998 with twin Cummins 270hp diesels has provided years of reliability to go with the increased speed. Fully outfitted with Furuno navigational / fish finder / GPS / radar equipment, along with the latest computer navigation systems, enables us to ply the waters with confidence in search of fishing and cruising adventures. We also supply all the saltwater Penn / Shimano / Garcia saltwater rods & reels, along with the latest n greatest tackle, and locally available baits.
Stepping inside from the fishing cockpit you're in main salon where you'll find it's warm and comfortable with a 360 degree view while dining and cruising. To the starboard side is the lower helm station and aft of that is the entertainment center complete with TV, DVD/VHS player along with CD sound system. Forward and down 3 steps is the galley that provides a compact yet very functional workstation for the marvelous meals by our onboard Chef/Stewardess. Across from the galley is the Chef's quarters and adjacent head (lavatory) and tub/shower.
Moving forward you find the 4 oversized bunks, 32"X78" (bigger than bunks on most 50' - 60' yachts) that are comfortable and roomy.....the lower ones moreso. Plenty of room is found underneath and to the side of the bunks for gear and luggage, There is another head (lavatory) forward as well. For additional guests we lower the dinette table and install the fitted cushions for a queen size bunk for two.
