Mongolia Darhad Valley

Travelling to Mongolia's famous Darhad Valley, you will fish two outstanding wilderness rivers during this two-week fishing adventure.  This is a trip for the adventurous angler, who enjoys camping out, good food, excellent fishing and stunning surroundings, on a professionally outfitted trip.  Enjoy wild-river fly-fishing for Taimen, Lenok Trout and Grayling.

The Darhad Valley, in the North of Mongolia, is a massive bowl of grassland, marsh, rivers and lakes, surrounded by jagged peaks and rugged wilderness.  The Valley has become internationally renowned for the abundant and large Taimen that prey on the white-fish stocks of the many lakes and rivers.  We will fish one of the many rivers draining into the valley.  En route to and from the Darhad we will fish one of the Khovsgol region's other excellent taimen rivers.

The itinerary is planned to maximize your fishing time, but avoid over-long days of jeep travel, and to offer a variety of rivers, fishing, and landscapes.  You will also experience Mongolia's nomadic way of life, visiting nomads in their gers to share a bowl of tea, and meeting them as they tend their herds of horses, goats, sheep, and yaks.

Sample itinerary:

Day 1 Arrive in UB.  Met at the airport by our representative.  
Transfer to comfortable Hotel.

Day 2 Transfer to Airport, fly to Muron (1 1/2 hrs); depart by jeep for fishing trip (2-3 hours drive). Camp at the first river.  

Day 3 Full-day fishing at the first river.  Camping.

Day 4 Fishing in the morning.   Afternoon begin drive to the Darhad Valley (4-5 hours). Camp by a small trout stream. Camping.

Day 5 Continue drive to the Darhad Valley (5-6 hours). Afternoon, arrive at the camp-site in the Darhad Valley, evening fishing. Camping.

Day 6 Taimen fishing in the Darhad Valley. Camping.

Day 7 Taimen fishing in the Darhad Valley. Camping.

Day 8 Taimen fishing in the Darhad Valley. Camping.

Day 9 Taimen fishing in the Darhad Valley. Camping.

Day 10 Drive out of the Darhad to the third fishing location (6-7 hours drive). Camping.

Day 11 Full day Taimen fishing.  Camping.

Day 12 Final day Taimen fishing.  Camping.

Day 13 Continue drive to Muron.  Fly Ulaanbaatar-Muron. Transfer to hotel.

Day 14 Free-day in Ulaanbaatar

Day 15 Onward travel

CATCH THE BIG ONES!
The average sized Taimen are around 28 to 30 inches long (70 - 80 cm) and 10 to 12 lbs.  There will be many opportunities at trophy Taimen over 40 inches (100 cm).  

SMALL GROUPS
Group size on our scheduled departures is limited to 8 rods.

TAIMEN CONSERVATION
We are actively involved in taimen conservation efforts and contribute directly to the local community.  Taimen fishing is catch-and-release with single barb-less hooks.

TAIMEN TACKLE
Fly-fish for taimen with a 9 foot 9 weight rod and floating line, or with a 15 ft double handed 10-11 wt rod.   Spin cast with a medium weight rod, 20 to 30lb braid, and single hook lures.

You will be camping in tents, sharing two persons to a three-person capacity mountain tent.  Single tents can be arranged for a supplement.  The camp is outfitted with a mess-tent for cooking and dining, with folding chairs and tables.  A toilet tent, and simple shower are also provided.  A variety of tasty European standard meals will be prepared by our cook.  Beer and wine can be supplied.
